Paramount Prepares for New Commercial Organics Collection Service

As part of an ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the City of Paramount is gearing up for a change in its waste practices. Beginning August 1, 2024, Athens Services, the City’s solid waste service provider, launched a new commercial organics collection service. This move aligns with the changes outlined in California Senate Bill (SB) 1383 and Paramount’s Ordinance No. 1156, which collectively aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by mandating the diversion of organic materials from landfills.

Over the past few weeks, Athens Services representatives have been visiting commercial and multifamily properties to assess their current waste management practices. During these visits, a Recycling Coordinator evaluates the service level needs for trash, recycling and organic services, offering tailored recommendations to meet each property’s specific requirements. In compliance with SB 1383, residents and businesses will now have three separate containers: one for trash, one for recycling, and one for organic waste.

As part of the commitment to facilitate the implementation of these new disposal practices, Athens Services also offers training opportunities for commercial properties, including multifamily properties. The introduction of this service will also lead to adjustments in billing practices. Invoices for customers will be adjusted based on the evaluated service levels required for the business and/or multifamily property. These adjustments will be determined by the Recycling Coordinator following their evaluation.

Through collaborative efforts and community engagement, Paramount is on the path towards a cleaner and greener future.
