What is a flare event?
A flare is a safety device that allows excess gases that cannot be used in the operation of a facility to be safely burned, protecting the community, refinery workers, and equipment.

South Coast AQMD requires facilities operating flares subject to Rule 1118 to provide a 24/7 telephone access to answer questions and provide information about planned and unplanned flare events to the public.
- Sign up for email notifications of planned and unplanned flare events
- Report air quality complaints associated with flares (or any other air quality concern) to South Coast AQMD by calling 1-800-CUT-SMOG.
