Organics Recycling

Organic material accounts for more than 33% of California’s waste. To reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by organic waste build up, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 1383 into law in September 2016. This statewide effort aims to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCP) by meeting the following targets:

  • Reduce organic waste disposal 50% by 2020 and 75% by 2025.
  • Encourage people to eat at least 20% of currently disposed surplus food by 2025.

Each jurisdiction is required to provide organic waste collection services to all residents and businesses by January 2022. The City of Paramount is currently planning for implementation of SB 1383 in the coming months.

Paramount residents will be responsible for separating their food scraps and other organic waste into a separate bin for curbside pick-up from CalMet. For more information, visit CalRecycle.ca.gov
