As part of its ongoing efforts toward monitoring air quality and protecting the health of residents, the City of Paramount was awarded a Facility Improvement Grant by the Port of Long Beach’s Facility Improvements Program. This grant will fund the installation of new, high-performance HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) air filters in the Paramount Learning Center at Spane Park.
The Facility Improvements Program is designed to reduce Port-related impacts – including air quality, noise, traffic, and water quality – on nearby communities, especially children, pregnant women, elderly, chronically ill, and individuals with respiratory/cardiopulmonary disease. The eligible facility improvements for the grant required identifying an eligibility zone and a priority zone.
The City first identified and applied for this grant in July 2017, naming the Learning Center as the intended project. The grant’s allowable costs include equipment cost, labor and installation, five-year-replacement of filters, and project management not to exceed 5% of the total cost.
Paramount was awarded the grant on September 15, 2017. The City is currently working with the Port of Long Beach to specify installation details. Installation of the air filters will occur in the next few months.
