The City of Paramount has received an Open Streets Grant from Metro to fund its Open Streets Neighborhood Connectivity Event in partnership with the neighboring City of Bellflower. To be held on June 1, 2019, the event will temporarily close 5.5 miles of road to automobile traffic and open the route to cyclists, pedestrians, and other forms of non-motorized transportation.
The Metro Board approved the Open Streets Competitive Grant Program in September 2013 in order to fund a series of regional car-free events. The Grant Program has three goals that provide opportunities to:
- Ride transit, walk, and ride a bike.
- Encourage future mode shifts to more sustainable transportation modes.
- Foster civic engagement to develop multi-modal policies and infrastructure at the city/community level.
The City applied for the grant in June and was one of 15 awardees, out of 26 applicants, announced in September.
